And THIS is Why We Bought a Jeep

For 15 years we towed our VW Jetta TDI behind our first RV, a Class C Jamboree Rally.  There were multiple times when we would be exploring only to come upon a sign that said 4-wheel drive only.  With the Jetta’s low clearance we never felt safe to venture onto the usually packed dirt or gravel roads.

Rock Springs KOA

Not any more!  This past week we had a short 2 -day stay at the KOA in Rock Springs, WY.  We looked at the mountain behind the campground and said why not!  Up we went on a road that was meant for the Jeep … a rocky dirt trail with sheer drops and switchbacks!  Yes, at times Joanna just closed her eyes, luckily she was not the one driving!  And if you go up you must come down!

After getting our tires dirty, so to speak, we ventured out to the White Mountain Petroglyphs and then on to the Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Tour.  After traveling most of the 24-mile gravel road we were rewarded with the wild horses just a short distance from the road.   We also were greeted with an amazing sunset as we came back down the mountains.

And if that were not enough off-roading, the next day we drove the back roads of the Flaming Gorge Scenic Byway through the canyons and mountains of SW Wyoming and NE Utah.  In the middle of the 8 hour trip we stopped at Browning’s Cafe in Dutch John, UT for a much needed break and lunch, then it was on to the Flaming Gorge Dam for a tour.  Again, wildlife abounded on all of the outings and the landscape was magnificent!

Now we are hunkered down in Provo, UT for a few days before heading down to St. George, UT to start our long-awaited caravan.  For those of you who do not know, there are companies that book excursions for RVers … they book the camp sites and activities, we just drive from place to place.  Joanna won a gift certificate to Adventure Caravans over a year ago at an FMCA rally so we booked the Grand Circle Tour. It looks like it will be an action packed month so we are not sure how often we will be able to post but hopefully we will be able to get a few shots of the national monuments we will be visiting up on the blog as we go.

Till next time!
